Republican Bristol County Sheriff Thomas M. Hodgson says his tough
love prison polices have vastly improved the operation of county
correctional facilities.
Fall River City Councilor Leo
O. Pelletier says that most of what Hodgson has done is grandstanding.
A Democrat and former cook at the county's Ash Street Jail, Pelletier
says he has the experience to run the county jail and house of correction
more effectively.
The two politicians, both of
whom live in Fall River, are vying for the six-year term of Bristol
County sheriff, to be decided in the November election. Hodgson,
50, a former New Bedford city councilor who moved to Fall River
five years ago, was appointed to the vacant sheriff's post in 1997.
A year later, he was elected to his first six-year term, defeating
Democrat Joseph McIntyre.
Hodgson has been a high profile
sheriff, garnering headlines for various initiatives, including
charging prisoners for room and board, instituting chain gangs,
and sending correction officers to patrol high crime areas in New
Bedford.
